About us
Washington County Fire Rescue #1 was founded on October 6, 1962, but was officially recognized in late 1963, by Jack Cole and other residents of Washington County. We are located in the southwest corner of Washington County in southwest Virginia. We operate out of one station which is located on Lee Highway between the city of Bristol and the Town of Abingdon. We started out providing only fire suppression in 1962. As our community started growing, we saw the need for improved emergency medical services. In 1992 we took on the responsibility of providing emergency medical transports for our community. We now run an average of 1,500-1,600 calls per year striving to provide top notch service to our community and citizens of Washington County, Virginia. Our department is a combination department with 10 volunteer and 8 full-time and 8 part-time paid members operating on 24 hour shifts. Our apparatus consists of two engines with 1,000 gallon tanks / 1250 GPM pumps, one tanker with a 3,000 gallon tank / 2,000 GPM pump, one heavy rescue truck, one brush truck with a 200 gallon tank, two advanced life support ambulances, and one command vehicle.
